About this pass

The Stelvio Pass is one of the most iconic mountain passes in the world. Located in the Italian Alps, it connects the Valtellina with the upper Adige valley and Vinschgau.

Tips

  • Best visited early morning to avoid traffic
  • The eastern side has 48 hairpin bends — spectacular but busy
  • Snow possible even in summer at the summit

My notes

This is an amazing pass to drive but last few years its been very busy. Everyone seems to want to drive this. Most people will drive up from the east side but do not know the other side. You also might want to combine this with a step into Switserland by driving down the much quieter Umbrail Pass.
